The Uluwatu and Bukit area in Bali is a surf paradise, known for its amazing surf breaks suitable for all skill levels - from beginners, to intermediates to pros.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up your skills, the perfect wave is waiting for you! Here are our favorite surf spots in the neighborhood:

Surf spots in Bukit Area for Beginners
Thomas Beach
Thomas Beach is a hidden gem that offers gentle, beginner friendly waves amid breathtaking scenery. Situated between the iconic surf spots of Uluwatu and Padang Padang, this beach is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed surfing experience. The crystal blue water is perfect for those learning to ride the waves, and the tranquil environment is ideal for families with small children.
Fun fact: Thomas Beach is also home to friendly sea turtles, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the local dugong, a gentle marine mammal known for grazing on seagrass.
As the birthplace of Color of Life Surfschool (COL), Thomas Beach holds a special place in our hearts. We love watching the sunsets here and frequently organize beach barbecues and bonfires on the sand, making it a perfect spot for both surfing and relaxation.
Padang Padang (Baby Padang)
Next to Thomas Beach lies the world-famous Padang Padang surf spot.
Accessed via a staircase from the street, the beach is beautifully framed by rocks, offering stunning views. Like Thomas Beach, Padang Padang is family-friendly and features slow, forgiving waves that are perfect for practicing.
However, be prepared for the crowds —this spot can get quite busy in and out of the water.
Before we schedule surf lessons here, we always check the crowd conditions to ensure a comfortable experience for our students.
Surf spots in Bukit Area for Intermediates
Dreamland Beach
Dreamland Beach is a sandy beach break that offers softer, gentle waves ideal for intermediate surfers. With multiple peaks to choose from, this spot is often referred to as the "gentle" wave. Just be mindful of the shore break at low tide, as it can be a bit stronger than at mid to high tide.
Balangan Beach
Balangan Beach features a mellow left-hand reef break, making it an excellent choice for intermediates looking to practice longer rides. The beach is wide and spacious, perfect for chilling out after a surf session. Waves here tend to break slower, providing ample opportunity to work on turns and maneuvers.
Uluwatu (The Peak and Racetracks
In the right conditions, Uluwatu is a fantastic spot for intermediates. The Peak, located right in front of the cave entrance, offers fun and forgiving waves on smaller swells. This renowned surf destination is perfect for those looking to challenge themselves without overwhelming conditions.
Bingin
Accessible via stairs, Bingin Beach is known for its laid-back atmosphere, charming beachside cafes, and breathtaking sunset views.
This spot offers a consistent left-hand reef break, great for intermediates ready to level up their skills.
Known for its barreling waves, the wave offers a fast drop-in and a hollow section.
Depending on the conditions, be mindful of the reef and the crowd, as Bingin can get quite busy.
Impossibles
Accessible by a short walk from Bingin, Impossibles is characterized by its beautiful scenery and clear blue water over a reef. This spot offers a long left-hand wave with multiple take-off points. It’s known for its challenging, fast sections, that might close out unexpectedly, earning its name for the spot. However, it can be a great wave for intermediates when the swell is smaller, offering long rides under the right conditions.
! Last but not least -
If you’re a beginner or unfamiliar with the local surf spots, we highly recommend you to connect with an experienced surf guide or instructor who knows the area inside and out. A knowledgeable guide can help you navigate the line-ups, understand local rules, and identify the best tides and conditions for each spot.
